Can I swap a car with someone in another Australian state?

By Nicholas Robertson, Founder, SwapU

Yes, interstate swaps are legal in Australia. Each vehicle is transferred using the transfer form of the state where that vehicle is currently registered. A Queensland-registered vehicle uses Form 3 (TMR); a NSW-registered vehicle uses the Service NSW form. Both parties complete their respective state's paperwork. Transfer duty is paid to the state where each vehicle is registered and transferred. Logistics (inspection, handover location) add complexity to interstate swaps compared to local swaps.

How interstate transfers work

Each vehicle in the swap is governed by the laws of the state where it is registered and where the transfer is processed. If you are a Queensland resident swapping with a NSW resident: - The Queensland vehicle uses Queensland's Form 3 and is subject to QLD transfer duty - The NSW vehicle uses NSW's transfer form and is subject to NSW transfer duty

Each party lodges their transfer in their respective state.

Transfer duty across state lines

Transfer duty is generally paid in the state where the transfer is processed, which is usually the state where the vehicle is registered at the time of the swap. Both parties should verify the applicable duty rate with their own state revenue office.

Safety certificates

Safety certificates are required in the state where the vehicle is registered. A Queensland Safety Certificate is required for a Queensland-registered vehicle; a NSW Pink Slip is required for a NSW-registered vehicle. These are independent processes.

Practical challenges

Interstate swaps introduce several practical challenges not present in local swaps: - **Inspection:** One or both parties may need to travel (or hire an independent inspector in the other state) to inspect the other vehicle before agreeing to the swap - **Handover logistics:** Keys, forms, and any cash top-up must be exchanged — either through an in-person meeting at a mutually convenient location, or through a structured simultaneous handover with independent witnesses - **Timing:** Coordinating safety certificates, PPSR checks, and handover across states requires more planning

SwapU's matching

SwapU's matching currently focuses on Brisbane. Interstate matches may be suggested but the practical logistics of an interstate swap are higher-friction than a local swap.

Re-registration

If you receive a vehicle registered in another state, you will generally need to re-register it in your state within a specified period. Check your state's transport authority for the re-registration requirements and fees.
